According to the Breach Level Index, in the past six years, more than 14 billion data records have been compromised due to data breaches. Such an astronomical volume of stolen records means fewer consumers are immune from the aftermath of these breaches, and in fact increasing numbers of consumers are repeat victims.

The paper highlights findings from the 2019 Customer Experience Index that Signifyd developed with the polling firm Survata, which analyzed sentiment from 2000 consumers around data breaches, fraud, and security. After introducing the purpose behind the survey, the document looks at the costs inherent with data breaches, including reputational costs, following by consumers' confidence (or lack thereof) in companies' data practices and the security of their own login and account data. After examining consumers' thoughts on online fraud and unauthorized charges, the focus turns to how such incidents affected respondents' views of retailers. The paper concludes with a brief look at the role technology providers are playing in today's eCommerce landscape.
